Agenda
Bell Ringer: Complete the “Newspaper Analysis and Idea Generation” Assignment.
Objective:
To analyze the structure and content of articles from other high school and city newspapers.
To use the knowledge gained from the analysis to generate original article ideas relevant to your school.
Directions:
You will be assigned to a group of 3-4 other students. Each group will receive a different high school/local paper to research.
Each group member will be responsible for individually searching the assigned newspaper for an article that catches their interest. This can be a news story, feature, or opinion piece. Once each member has selected an article, the group will come together to discuss and compare their choices. Through this discussion, the group will reach a consensus on a single article to analyze as a group.
Part One: Complete the graphic organizer once the article has been chosen.
Part Two: After analyzing the article, each group should come up with 3 article ideas that are relevant to your school. The ideas should be based on the angle, sources, and writing style they observed in the article they analyzed.
Part Three: Prepare a presentation that includes the following:
A summary of the article you chose to analyze
A brief explanation of your analysis of the article
Describe your 3 article ideas and how they relate to the school
Present your findings to the class and be prepared to answer questions and receive feedback on your ideas.
Grading:
Analysis of the chosen article
Originality and relevance of the article's ideas
Quality of the presentation
Participation in class discussion

Complete the Article 1 Group Brainstorm.
Brainstorm Directions:
You will be divided into groups of 4-5 students each.
Each group will be assigned one of the following topics to focus on: News, Sports, Arts & Culture, Feature, and Skyline Community.
Brainstorm as many article ideas as possible related to your assigned topic. Think creatively and come up with unique angles.
There is a time limit of 30 minutes for the brainstorming session.
After the time is up, each group will share their top 3-5 ideas with the class.
As a class, we will vote on the top 3-5 ideas from each group to explore further.
Each group will be responsible for developing one of the chosen ideas into a complete article, which will be due in two weeks. There will be a progress check-in next week.

Begin working on Article 1 Rough Draft.
Article 1 Rough Draft Directions:
Each group member will be assigned to draft their own version of the chosen article idea, focusing on their unique angle and writing style.
Each group member will have one week to complete their draft.
In one week, each group member will share their draft with the rest of the group.
Each group member will be responsible for reviewing and providing feedback on at least two other group members' drafts.
After the peer review, each group member will incorporate the feedback received into their own draft and make revisions as necessary.
Once the revisions are complete, the group will work together to finalize the article and prepare it for submission.
