Bell Ringer: Finish the Historical Article Analysis Assignment.
Directions: Journalism plays a critical role in shaping our understanding of the world around us. News articles can inform, educate, and inspire, but they can also mislead and manipulate. The ability to critically analyze news articles and understand their significance is an important skill for any citizen. In this assignment, you will have the opportunity to delve into a historical news article and uncover the impact it had on the events of its time.
You will need to find an article that has had a significant impact on history, and then answer the 5Ws and 1H questions about the article and briefly explain why it was significant. This assignment will help you understand the impact of journalism on historical events and will give you the opportunity to practice your critical thinking and writing skills.

Directions: First, read “8 Functions of the Press,” adapted from Blur: How to Know What’s True in the Age of Information Overload.
After you read, complete the 8 Functions of the Press assignment.
Homework: High School Newspaper Comparison.
Directions: Research and identify at least three high school newspapers from schools in your area. Review the articles and content in each newspaper, and take note of the types of articles that are published (e.g. news, features, opinion, sports, etc.).
Analyze the news coverage of each newspaper, specifically looking at the types of stories covered and how they are presented (e.g. headline, lead, imagery, etc.).
Evaluate the design and layout of each newspaper's website, and take note of any features or elements that stand out to you. Consider the target audience of each newspaper and how the content, design, and layout of the newspaper appeal to their audience.
By following these instructions, you will be able to critically analyze and compare the content, design, and layout of high school newspapers and websites and understand the role and purpose of high school newspapers in the community.
