Complete the 2/7 Bell Ringer.
You will work individually or in small groups, whichever you prefer.
You will receive a list of headlines from recent news stories. Choose one headline that interests you.
Before writing the lead paragraph, read the corresponding news article to get a complete understanding of the story. Make sure to gather all the relevant information.
Write a lead paragraph based on the article, focusing on summarizing the main information clearly and concisely. Try to include the 5 W's (who, what, where, when, why) in the lead, if possible.
Make sure your lead paragraph is not too similar to the original lead in the article. This assignment is about putting your own spin on summarizing the most important information, so get creative and show off your writing skills!
Once you have completed your lead paragraph, share it with a peer. Your peer will provide feedback on elements such as clarity, conciseness, and accuracy of information.
Finally, as a class, we'll discuss the best practices for writing a lead paragraph in the inverted pyramid style and how you can apply these skills in future journalism assignments.
