Agenda

  1. Bell Ringer: 1/12

  2. Please complete the Arrests, Roundups, and Internment Assignment.

    • Objective: Use original primary and secondary sources to investigate the forced internment of Japanese-Americans — and track how the government has gradually apologized for some of its actions over the decades.

    • Working in small groups (max of 4), each of you should read two (2) of The New York Times articles from the time period. Your goal is to figure out what you can find in 1940s news coverage that explains why the American government forced people from their homes into internment camps simply because of their ethnicity and why the rest of the country let it happen.

    • You should look for the following:

      • explicit or implied reasons given within the articles to justify the roundups

      • clues within the writing itself (such as the words used to describe Japanese-Americans, language that reveals bias or an outdated perspective, or sensationalism) that provide insight about contemporary attitudes

      • the type of sources for the article (for example, does the article rely exclusively on government sources? Does it include any Japanese-American voices?)

  3. Make a poster of your Arrests, Roundups, and Internment graphic organizer.

    • When you are done filling out the graphic organizer:

      • Divide your poster into 8 sections.

      • Write down the headline, date, and newspaper.

      • Briefly summarize (2-3 sentences) the explicit reason, clues within the writing, and sourcing on the poster.
