Prompts:
Fitzgerald incorporates specific descriptions of the main characters throughout the novel's beginning. Choose one of these descriptions for two different main characters and explain how each quote successfully depicts that character as a representation of 1920s society/culture.
In the first three chapters, it is difficult to separate the hearsay surrounding Gatsby from actual truths/facts about him and his life. Find one example of each (hearsay and fact/truth) and evaluate how it adds to the reader’s “perception” of his character.
Compare and contrast the party in chapter two (in the apartment with Myrtle and Tom) with Gatsby’s party at his mansion. How does each party manage to capture an important element of 1920’s society?
How has Nick evolved (as a narrator and character) from the beginning of his story to now, at the end of chapter three? How has he been affected by the cultural situation(s) he has been exposed to? Would you ultimately consider him a reliable or unreliable narrator?
Choose one symbol (a physical object that represents a larger idea) from the beginning of the novel and explain its importance. Make sure to tie the symbol specifically back to 1920s culture and The American Dream.
